5 Design Principles for eHealth
Good principles from Brett Warren. The first one really resonates with me. "Assume people won’t receive training". At one of my past roles, I worked on a very complex business intelligence application for health systems. Users were expected to receive training in order to be able to use it, but of course that didn't always happen. The principle doesn't solve the problem of making the software more intuitive, but at least it sets the right expectation.
Digital Health Collaborative
“The Digital Health Collaborative is a group of leading healthcare and consumer organizations that share a commitment to “raising the bar” for evidence and value in digital health technology.”
Sanofi Health Rebrand
Sanofi wins “Distinction” in the 2024 Rebrand awards. See their “before” and “after” identities across digital, print, signage, and more.
2024 Healthcare UX Design Award Winners
Some really interesting winners in the Health category at the Spring 2024 UX Design Awards. Many are still concepts, but interesting nonetheless.
Mind Over Matter: The Placebo Effect in Artificial Intelligence and User Experience
Interesting take on ethically managing patient expectations around AI and digital tools. Aiming to describe genuine benefits rather than inflated perceptions will foster trust with the user.
V3+ Framework for Sensor Based Digital Health Tech
Verification and Validation is pretty standard for Software as a Medical Device. What's interesting is that they've added Usability Validation as a fourth (equal) component. This lends more credibility to the importance of usability for anyone using this framework or one similar.
From thinking to knowing: user research in healthcare
I like this from their "Lessons Learned" during the "Develop" phase of their process: "Consider ways to speak to people who might not come forward to take part in online testing. Can you run workshops with community groups, or find ways to work with people with accessibility needs?"

Scholarly Research
Application of a user experience design approach for an EHR-based clinical decision support system
“The article presents a study applying a user experience (UX) design approach to the development of a clinical decision support (CDS) system for pediatric asthma, aiming to enhance usability and physician engagement by understanding their workflows, decision-making processes, and needs through mixed-methods research involving interviews and surveys.”
Usability of Health Care Price Transparency Data in the United States: Mixed Methods Study
“The research paper examines the usability of health care price transparency (PT) data in the U.S., finding that the current PT information's poor usability and inconsistent formats do not meet the requirements for being consumer-friendly or machine-readable as mandated by legislation.”
Physicians’ and Patients’ Expectations From Digital Agents for Consultations: Interview Study Among Physicians and Patients
“The study explored whether digital agents like ChatGPT could improve medical consultations, treatment adherence, and health literacy. Interviews with patients and physicians helped shape three digital agent concepts—a silent expert, a communicative expert, and a digital companion—to support the healthcare journey. Despite openness to digital aid, there were reservations, leading to nine design requirements for such agents to enhance consultations and health literacy effectively.”
